Overview

When the Homepie team came to us with their vision for a central online marketplace for buyers and sellers to conduct transactions directly, saving sellers a 6% commission fee, we knew it would require a combination of our knack for user-centered design and Homepie’s real estate expertise to pull it off.

We simply couldn’t expect users to engage in a process as complex as selling or buying a home on a brand new online platform without providing an experience that exhibited trustworthiness and clarity. So we sought out to craft an experience that not only fills the role of a realtor, but takes it a step further to educate and equip buyers and sellers so they feel more in control.

Challenge

Beyond simply designing a delightful online marketplace, a core aspect of Homepie’s vision was to equip users with a contract negotiation tool that could guide them through the complexities of creating and countering offers in the same way that a real estate agent would. This required our team to fully understand the ins and outs of the negotiation process and test nearly every possible scenario or edge case.

Implementation of the negotiation tool also proved to be incredibly challenging from a development perspective as well. A complicated decision tree that tracked thousands of possible term combinations across multiple rounds of negotiation was required to reliably translate approvals into a legally binding contract.

We worked with Homepie to map out user flows for nearly every possible negotiation scenario and edge case to ensure there were no gaps or loopholes. Since all contract terms are negotiable, it was crucial for us to understand and visualize all of the possible outcomes.

Solution

Buying and selling a home is a major decision with a lot of legal mystery. Our offer and negotiation tool needed to fill the role of a real estate agent in educating users on what each decision meant as they crafted their offers and counteroffers.

In order to develop trust with our users, we had to ensure that the tech could instantly and reliably convert their decisions into a Docusign contract, allowing for everything to take place on the Homepie platform.
